Space Salvage Blog #15 :VFX Overhaul-Dyson Sphere-Enemies and NPCs

Before we talk about this month’s updates, the whole team at Fruity Systems wants to wish you all Happy Holidays close to your chosen loved ones. We would like to thank everyone that has been beside us through the journey of developing Space Salvage so far, whether you’ve been reading our blog for a while or if this is your first!

Now – grab yourself a festive drink or snack of your choosing and let’s get into it!

VFX Overhaul

If you’re getting a feeling of deja-vu, you’d be correct.

“Haven’t you already updated your VFX??”

Yes. VFX have been a very tricky part of development so far due to the technical limitations surrounding the current Meta Quest headsets available. Matching the stylized look of the world with the VFX has proven to be a long process of trial and error. Here are a few clips of a BIG SCARY LASER and explosion that we have to show off. Please let us know what you think on our discord! Hopefully version 4.0  of the stylization will be our winner in both style and performance with the help of one of our new team members tackling the problem head on.

Our team has nearly doubled in the past couple of months! Maybe soon we can do a proper introduction for the new team members

Dyson Sphere

Our art team has been hard at work as well as the rest of the team working in the engine to push levels as far as we can with technical limitations. A big ambition we had in our roadmap was to have a massive structure with a star contained in the centre, acting as a sun. Through collective effort, we were able to string along something we’re very excited about. Here’s a sneak peek. In this level, you will be destroying the mega structure by removing key components to its structural integrity and hurling them into the “sun” using momentum and your gravity gun. But be careful – being that close to a star can do some senior scorching to your D.E.R.P.

Enemies and NPCs

If you had a look over last months Dev Blog you would have seen a level with a LOT of billboards and jumbotrons. That got us thinking that we will need some NPC’s populating various areas of the universe. We’ve also added allies for your enemies, so more enemies! Check out the details below.

Heal Drones

You have seen our “beloved” F.L.O.C. drones and so far they have all been built to inflict damage on the player pod. We thought they might need some less artillery focused siblings. Introducing the new menace inhabiting the cosmos! New drone flocs will have a healer present there to make it that much harder for you to get the pests out of your way. I am sure you are all going to try and target their medic, so good luck! The little guy is skilled in…evasive manoeuvres.

Who knows, in the distant future of your career at the SSC you might even be able to convince such a drone to side with you…

F.U.G.U.

Hopefully, you did not think you were the only capable space janitor out there? And S.A.R.A has warned that you may be replaced with A.I. soon. F.U.G.U. are non-hostile work units that are not operated by pilots. You will likely see them going about their business in busy areas of the cosmos. Be sure to say hi and be polite to the little guys. Most interplanetary companies use the model nowadays, so you might be making commercial enemies if you interfere with their daily chores.

What’s to come!

We are working on adding a lot of new levels, upgrades and story! The coming months should be packed with quite a lot of new things to show you, so look forward to them!
Thank you for reading this months dev blog, and we will hopefully see you next month!

Space Salvage Blog #14 : World Building – Upgrades – New Level

Happy November all! We have a lot to show you this month, so grab yourself a drink while you read this months Dev Blog!

As always, please follow the links to help us out more; leave a review on the app lab page if you have not already!

Do not forget! To get the latest updates every Friday and even chat with the devs, join our discord!

World Building

We have been doing a bit of world building for Space Salvage, especially in the form of posters! You will see these plastered around billboards, the hub and maybe even in your pod! You will learn more about the company brands selling you all their products, as well as SSC, your corporate overlords!

One of the big changes we have is the renaming of the Space Salvage pod, formerly known as the M.K 11, will be renamed to “Driver Enabled Recovery Pod” (D.E.R.P for short). This is much catcher for your everyday space pilot!
Have a look through the multiple posters we have and learn the SSC etiquette! Who knows, maybe later we’ll even show you some advertisement for rival companies of SSC…

Enemies

You will have different types of drones to fend off when exploring as well, so be careful when flying out there! Other than shooting them down, you may even be able to stun them with a fancy new upgrade! We will not talk too much about this kind of upgrade right now, but here’s a sneaky peek at what that upgrade could do to the poor drones.

Upgrades

Speaking of upgrades! We have new and shiny(ish) toys for you and your D.E.R.P! SSC have developed new upgrades to help you in your venture through the vast galaxies of Space Salvage! Let us get into each one!

Gravity Gun

A gun which allows you to fire at objects and move them to where ever you want them to go! This function allows us to give players more intricate missions, such as fixing broken mechanical objects, opening/unlocking containers or just throwing junk into a giant sun! Whatever your heart desires!
Here are some videos of the gravity gun in action!

We had a bit of trouble getting this to work as moving the object while rotating your D.E.R.P caused a lot of crazy bugs to appear, such as the object that was being held, would spin and move around in an erratic manner.
Here is a video of how we had to keep adjusting to get it right; explained by the lovely Paul Tapper, CEO of Fruity Systems.

Hack Tool

Have you ever gone against drones? Wanted them to shoot at something other than you? Well look no further as the SSC have developed a new hacking tool! Turn your enemies against each other with this brand-new upgrade! Against a swarm of floc drones? Don’t worry, the hacking tool will convert those little buggers into your friendly AI!

We’ve currently only made them stop hitting you, but in the future, they will target your foes!

New Level

We have mentioned the gravity gun and its many uses, as well as shown you a few videos on it! But let us put that gravity gun to work!

Our new level centres around the use of the gravity gun, as well as introduces a new contender to the world of Space Salvage. Meet the Salvage Acquisitions Group (SAG), a rival company to your great and mighty overlords, SSC. These hooligans have decided to destroy the transmitter in a popular telemarketing location and replaced all of our SSC propaganda adverts with SAG adverts! The audacity!
It is up to you to find all the missing parts and fix the transmitter using the gravity gun! But be warned, it will not be an easy grab and go…

What’s to come!

We are working on adding a lot of new levels, upgrades and story! The coming months should be packed with quite a lot of new things to show you, so look forward to them!

Space Salvage Blog #13 : Halloween – Community Testing – Feedback

It is the spooky season! We want to just say Happy Halloween to you all and hope you get all the treats you wanted!

Halloween

‘Tis the season of spooky! Here at Fruity Systems, we are very much into any and all holidays and events, so we wanted to share scary-ness with you! Some of our team members made a very cute Fruity Systems logo for their pumpkin, as well as a puking one, both very scary and adorable!

Have a look at the pictures!

Community Testing

If you have not heard already, we will not be releasing the Early Access any more, but instead will release when the full game is completed and ready! This is due to us getting a publisher! We are very excited as it is an amazing feat for a small indie team; we did feel bad but instead, allowed the community to test out what we were going to release for Early Access instead!
You were able to get into the testing if you were in our discord, so if you haven’t already, come and join us! You might be able to jump in on the next set of testing!

The community has been a huge help and the feedback we have received so far has been absolutely amazing! We’d just like to give them all a big thank you for taking the time to play, test and write feedback for us! We’ve learnt a lot, found a lot of bugs and are working on improving them all!

Feedback

From the feedback we have received from the community testers, one piece of feedback that kept popping up was the AI in the drones! They would get stuck in small places and lose all of their threatening evil-ness when you would find one. Poor little drone 🙁

That is why we have improved our AI! No more flying into areas that will get them stuck, and no more crashing! (hopefully) Only danger for you in the vast world of Space Salvage! So prepare your space butts and lasers for when you go against the new AI!

We will even share a small peek of how they are doing below, they can even do loop de loops now, be scared!

What’s to come!

We will be working more on the feedback given by our Community to improve Space Salvage. We even enjoy and use the feedback we get from the demo! Next month, we will share more about what we are improving or changing, so look forward to our improvements! We might even show new levels, who knows, have a great spooky month everyone!

Space Salvage Blog #12 : EGX – Recruiting

Time for the September Dev Blog! There has not been much lately as we have been going to many conventions and talking to you all! We wanted some quality time with you guys and that is what we did at EGX!

As always, please follow the links to help us out more; leave a review on the app lab page if you have not already!

EGX

What an amazing convention EGX was! It was just as good as last year, maybe even better! A lot more VR games, talks and even a section! We felt the VR love.

We reconnected with a lot of influencers and press from last year, as well as some of you from Gamescom! Not only that, but we would just like to thank you all for supporting us and sticking with us in our journey to create Space Salvage! We hope you enjoyed the demo as well as the pins, bookmarks and other free merch!

Below are some images of the EGX event:

Recruiting

We would like to give you all a heads-up that we will be recruiting soon! We will have multiple roles available, so if you know someone who is either into VFX, creating music or a 3D artist, that is knowledgable in unity, then please let them know!

For more information, join our discord for all the links as they will be the first to get the links and announcements.

Likewise, we will be making an official ad posting later on; on multiple job sites, so be on the lookout!

What’s to come!

We have amazing news next month that I am not allowed to tell you yet, but do not worry, it is definitely worth the wait! An announcement that even shocked us! So please stay tuned for next month!

Space Salvage Blog #11 : Gamescom – Home – Story

August Dev Blog! Time is flying by fast! Check out what we have been up to and, as always, please follow the links to help us out more; leave a review on the app lab page if you have not already!

Do not forget! To get the latest updates every Friday and even chat with the devs, join our discord!

Gamescom

Gamescom, one of the biggest conventions we are attending this year! (so far) At the time of this dev blog release, we are still at Gamescom, so if you haven’t already, head on over to our booth, play our demo and come talk to us!
Before we jump into the recap of this month, we just want to share a few pictures, free goodies and just to say thank you to everyone who has tried our demo! As well as showing off our new hero image!

Home

We’ve got a snazzy new place for all SSC members to hang out, chill and pick their missions! Grab a juice box, slice of food flavoured cake, anyone? And do not mind the mess, SSC do not pay for janitors.

This is where you will be selecting your missions, upgrading your pod and even looking at your own stats! This environment opens up a bunch of functions for you while you relax at the bar, mingle with your fellow employees and stare out into the window to see the vast galaxies you will be exploring!

Story

Other than aimlessly scavenging for cargo, doing backyard races, shooting down drones, there will be special missions that tell a tale of this vast world. They will have bespoke assets as well as certain mechanics and puzzles for you to decipher; large enemies may appear. Will you be forced to fight or run? Only time will tell, and we can not wait to release this early access for you to find out.
Enjoy a small snippet of the story mission, which has a couple of placeholder items.

What’s to come!

We are sorry there is not much this month. With Gamescom and us working on getting early access ready (and it is VERY soon) we have been a little bit tied down. So thank you all for your patience, and we hope that this early access satisfies you all and has very little bugs!
